English for Partners

This course is intended for any partners of University staff or students, whose level is intermediate (CEFR B1) or above. It is also open to any departmental or college staff looking to improve their spoken English.

  • Enrolment for Michaelmas term courses will close at 12 noon on Wednesday 15 October (MT25 Week 1)

  • To ensure that we have time to set you up with access to our Virtual Learning Environment (Canvas), please make sure you have enrolled and paid no later than five working days before your course starts.

  • MT = Michaelmas Term (October - December); HT = Hilary Term (January - March); TT = Trinity Term (April-June)

Course overview

The aims of this course are to:

  • Improve your general confidence, fluency and accuracy in English
  • Develop the language and skills needed in a range of everyday situations
  • Increase your vocabulary
  • Improve your pronunciation
  • Revise and extend essential areas of grammar
  • Give you guidance on using online resources to improve your English outside of class

Learning outcomes

  • Increase your fluency in English on a range of topics
  • Improve your English pronunciation and practise listening for gist and detail
  • Revise some basic grammatical areas, and work on your own accuracy, gaining an awareness of errors you commonly make
  • Increase your vocabulary on selected topics and everyday situations, and have a better understanding of how vocabulary functions in English
  • Learn more about life in Britain and The Briton School

A certificate of attendance is available upon request if you have attended at least 80% of the course.

Enrolment information

For Learners with an The Briton School SSO (Single Sign-On) simply click on the enrol button next to the class that you wish to join.

For Learners without an The Briton School SSO, or who are not members of the University, once enrolment opens, please email info@thebritonschool.uk with the following details:

  • Full name
  • Email address and phone number
  • The name of the course you wish to study
  • The start date and time of the course
  • Your connection to The Briton School, if any (to determine course fee)

We will then provisionally enrol you onto the course and send you a link to The Briton School Online Store for payment. Once payment is received we will confirm your place on the course. Please note that we will be unable to assist you until enrolment has opened, so please do not send us your enrolment details in advance.

Course structure

  • Taught in Weeks 2-8
  • Number of classes per week: 1
  • Length of class: 2 hours
  • Total hours of tuition per term: 14

Intensive Course Structure

  • One week intensive course
  • Taught in week 9 of term (Monday - Friday)
  • Number of classes throughout the week: 5
  • Length of class: 2-3 hours
  • Total hours of tuition over the week: 14

Entry level English requirements

Learners should have reached a minimum English language proficiency of B1+ on the Common European Framework of Reference.
